Honda has released the all-new Civic Type R high-performance hatchback onto the UK's roads, five years after the outgoing model first arrived. The Japanese manufacturer refers to it as a 'race car for the road' and few can argue with this claim. The car is a class leader for performance and has the looks to match its athletic driving dynamic. Johnsons Honda will shortly be taking delivery of the vehicle and you can find out more about it below.

True motorsport pedigree

Whereas some hot hatches are content to simply provide a modest amount of extra performance and driving fun compared to a standard hatchback, the new Civic Type R takes its status as a high performer seriously. No other tuned front-wheel drive hatchback can match the Japanese model for acceleration as it sprints from standing to 60mph in around 5.7 seconds before hitting a top speed of 167mph. The turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine is responsible for these impressive figures and it produces 310 PS plus 400Nm of torque at 2,500rpm.

An innovative suspension system enhances the car's handling and power delivery noticeably, while one of the most significant additions is the '+R' button. One press of it sharpens the response of various chassis and drivetrain systems and lessens the influence of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. The technology transforms the Type R from an energetic but controlled road car into an unshackled racer and is sure to be a big attraction for proper motoring enthusiasts.

A stand-out example

The overall design also plays a part in the car's memorable performance as Honda has shaped the hatchback aerodynamically and fitted it with features that improve handling and pace. A vast rear wing and diffuser at the back increases downforce, while the stiff shell minimises body roll significantly. Meanwhile, vents on the bonnet and behind the 19-inch alloys help the engine and performance brakes perform at their best for longer. These functional details are also sure to turn heads on the road, as is the mesh grille and sculpted wheel arches.

Technology in abundance

Honda hasn't forgotten that the Type R is likely to act as an everyday car for many buyers and makes plenty of convenience features available as a result. The all-new GT-Pack is expected to be a popular addition as it fits features such as front and rear parking sensors, dusk sensing headlamps, automatic wipers and electric door mirrors. The Honda Connect Infotainment system also gets an upgrade with integrated Garmin satellite navigation.
