The new Passat from Volkswagen poses a strong challenge to all other upmarket saloons and estates in each respective class, yet also represents affordability. Now into its eighth generation, the model is better than ever, benefiting from all of the carmaker's most recent advancements.
Buyers upgrading from the previous example will notice the new design approach taken by the marque, which gives the Passat a reworked front end. A three-bar chrome grille merges with slim headlamps, while at the rear the simple arrangement features two exhaust pipes that integrate with the bumper. The dimensions have changed too, making the model 12mm wider and 14mm lower than its predecessor. LED headlamps are an option with the entry level S grade, and all arrive with alloy wheels.
Inside, space and comfort remain the focal point of the cabin. There's more room than before for passengers to stretch out in, and all around them are premium materials blended together with typical Volkswagen craftsmanship. The four-door saloon includes a 60/40 split folding rear bench to expand its 586-litre boot, while the estate's luggage capacity has also grown to 650 litres.

Helping the Passat to compete with its rivals is an impressive selection of onboard technology. The standard version comes with a 6.5-inch colour display integrated with the centre console, as well as a DAB radio, AUX input and the manufacturer’s Multi Device Interface with iPod ® connectivity. The Bluetooth® system allows calls to be received hands-free, while air conditioning keeps the cabin at the optimum temperature. Five trim grades are available in total, the top-end R-Line fitting the vehicle with ergoComfort seats plus a sophisticated satellite navigation system with voice control.
All current-generation Passat models are offered with a choice of five diesel engines, with no petrol option from Volkswagen. There’s no lack of pace, however, as you can opt for a 237bhp powertrain that achieves 0-60mph acceleration in 6.1 seconds and comes with four-wheel drive. The standard units are a 118bhp 1.6-litre TDI and a 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI, both returning 70.6mpg combined when coupled with a manual gearbox. These refined engines are also the cleanest in the family, with CO2 emissions as low as 105g/km.
When at the wheel of the Passat you can have complete confidence in its ability to keep you safe. Various intelligent active technologies work to help you avoid accidents, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control, and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). In the event of a collision the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System kicks in to slow the car, while strategically-placed airbags, head restraints and ISOFIX anchor points protect all occupants. When crash-tested by Euro NCAP, the new Passat received the maximum five-star rating to prove its capabilities in this area.
