Could it be the Best Supermini Yet?

One of the UK’s most popular superminis, and certainly one of the best, the Volkswagen Polo has now entered its sixth exciting generation. The Polo has been around since 1975 and over the years it has evolved to become the attractive, easy-to-drive, efficient, practical and comfortable car that it is today. The all-new Polo comes in S, SE, Beats, SEL and R-Line trim levels, as well as GTI and GTI+ hot hatch variants.

Bigger is Better

The new Polo is larger than ever. It’s also almost one centimetre lower, which contributes to its purposeful bearing, something that is further enhanced by a slightly lower roofline and more prominent bumpers. Cargo capacity, meanwhile, has increased from 280 litres to 351 litres. Despite the increase in size, the car is actually lighter than before, which helps to deliver enhanced efficiency.

An Exceptionally Safe Supermini

The Polo comes with Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star rating, which means it has passed a series of rigorous crash tests to ensure high levels of safety for each occupant. The vehicle comes with a wide range of driver aids and passive safety features as standard. Included are Electronic Stability Control, Hill-hold Assist and an Automatic Post-collision Braking System. The new Polo also features Front Assist, a radar-based technology that analyses the movement of vehicles that are up to 80 metres ahead. If a collision is deemed likely, the driver is provided with audio and visual warnings. A worst-case scenario sees the system automatically applying braking pressure if the driver fails to do so.

WHATCAR 5 STARS

My, How You’ve Grown!

The Mark 6 Polo has increased in size and now adopts a five-door body style across all models, ensuring easy access for passengers in the back row. Thanks to a subtly redesigned body, the car is more elegant than ever. Despite its expanded dimensions, Volkswagen has managed to make this supermini even sleeker than before. However, it’s the vehicle’s interior that has undergone the biggest revolution. The cabin looks and feels classier than ever, with generous applications of soft-touch materials and seats that offer even greater comfort. The all-new Polo is now eight centimetres longer and seven centimetres wider, resulting in more legroom being available for rear-row passengers. There’s also a little more headroom in each compartment.

Exciting Technology at your Fingertips

The all-new Volkswagen Polo comes with several desirable technological features. A very responsive, high-resolution eight-inch touchscreen on the dashboard is included as standard. This provides access to – and control of – the car’s infotainment features (including DAB digital radio), as well as air-conditioning, automatic headlamps and much more. The Mark 6 Polo is innovative too. For example, it’s the first vehicle in its class to adopt an 11.7-inch Active Info Display, which sits behind the car’s steering wheel in place of more traditional dials. This configurable instrument cluster can also be set up to present satellite navigation output, among other things.

Choose Your Engine

This latest Polo is a smooth-driving vehicle whose pliant suspension makes light work of pitted surfaces. The car is typically fitted with a 1.0-litre 65bhp petrol engine, but one of a pair of turbocharged petrol units – delivering 95bhp or 114bhp – can also be selected. Meanwhile, another petrol option, a 1.5-litre eco-turbocharged engine, balances performance and efficiency by reducing cylinder activation. For motorists that regularly make long trips, there are two 1.6-litre diesel units to choose from, offering power outputs of 90bhp and 95bhp.
