Very Comfortable FIND OUT MORE

Very Comfortable, Extremely Practical

Unlike the majority of seven-seat vehicles, the XC90’s third row is actually suitable for adults, a feature that further boosts its business-friendly credentials. In fact, all seats are full-size, and plenty of head and legroom is available for each traveller. The cabin is well soundproofed, ensuring that external noises – and engine sounds – are kept to an absolute minimum. The driver is provided with a power-adjustable seat, which allows him or her to quickly establish a comfortable position. An array of stowage spaces are provided throughout, and, with all seven seats in place, boot volume stands at a not-inconsiderable 451 litres. With all but the first row of seats folded, cargo capacity rises to a very useful 1,951 litres.

Superlative Safety FIND OUT MORE

Superlative Safety

It goes without saying, but Volvo’s flagship SUV comes with Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star crash test rating. You’ll even notice that the car’s safety belts feature the legend ‘Since 1959’ – this was the year that Volvo launched the three-point seatbelt. Passengers are contained within a high-strength boron-steel compartment, which offers the first line of physical defence. A full suite of airbags are provided throughout, adding yet more protection for each occupant. The car comes with all the driver aids you would expect – and more. Volvo Pilot Assist II features too, a semi-autonomous system that, among other things, uses Adaptive Cruise Control to keep the vehicle in lane.

Leading-Edge Tech

A keyless system provides the driver with easy access to the car. Inside, a nine-inch, profile-oriented, high-definition Sensus display is situated at the centre of the car’s dash, directly adjacent to the steering wheel. The touchscreen takes, perhaps, an hour to fully get to grips with. It’s time well spent, however, because operating it soon becomes second nature, with pinch-and-swipe gesturing making it very simple to use. The dashboard has a pleasingly minimal look, featuring only eight buttons that are simple to identify, and operate. A ten-speaker sound system (including DAB radio) and Sensus Navigation System are included as standard too. Also featured is a configurable TFT screen, which replaces old-fashioned dials, and provides navigation graphics and information.

LUXURY PERFORMANCE

Volvo XC90

A trio of upmarket SUVs form a part of the Volvo range; the forthcoming XC40 and the XC60 – and the biggest of the three, the XC90. This highly rated vehicle has been in production since 2002 and is now in its second generation, which is even larger than the Mark 1 model. It’s a classy looking vehicle that possesses a luxurious, spacious and very practical interior – and delivers a comfortable, serene ride too. The car makes the most of its interior space, providing room for seven travellers, and, since it’s a Volvo, it comes with a whole raft of safety features. The XC90 is perfect for adventurous families that also appreciated the creature comforts delivered by a high-quality vehicle. The car is also ideal for businesses, particularly those who like to make a strong impression.

Sophisticated Swedish Good Looks

The XC90 features subtle nods to its Scandinavian heritage with, for example, Norse-hammer-style LED daytime running lights, which flank the car’s subtly impressive radiator grille. The car possesses an elevated ride height, which helps to deliver its considerable road presence, as does a gently rising window line. Also attracting the eye is a subtly tapering roofline that ends in a discreet spoiler. With the XC90, Volvo has forgone the overtly flashy looks that define many rival SUVs. Instead, they have produced a wholly contemporary and suitably elegant vehicle that embraces all finest qualities of the marque.

Performance and Efficiency

A 2.0-litre 235bhp diesel (D5) engine is fitted as standard. This produces 480Nm of torque and 0-60mph in a little over seven seconds, while managing up to approximately 42mpg. The most fuel-efficient option is provided by plug-in hybrid variants, which are installed with a 2.0-litre 407bhp (T6) unit that returns as much as approximately 134mpg, and produces emissions as low as 49g/km. Delivering optimal performance levels is a 2.0-litre 320bhp engine (T6) puts out 400Nm of torque, 0-60mph in roughly six seconds and a top speed of 143mph. Four-wheel drive is standard with each – Momentum, R-Design and Inscription – trim level. Models installed with D5 and T6 engines are able to pull as much as 2,700kg, making the XC90 rather useful when it comes to towing a sizeable caravan or boat.
