Hyundai IONIQ 5 N debuts at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Reintroducing Hyundai N

Calling all Hyundai fans and performance car followers. There’s a new car that should be on your radar: the all-new Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.

Building on the big-hit IONIQ 5, the IONIQ 5 N is the first badged, all-electric model from Hyundai’s high-performance brand, N.

N prioritises three pillars: corner rascal (body and chassis reinforcements for rally-inspired cornering), racetrack capability (engines that offer up to 478kWh/650PS for increased endurance) and everyday sportscar (N e-shift and N Active Sound that deliver the feeling and sound of a high-performance car).

The N stands not only for Namyang, a district in South Korea, where the cars are designed by Hyundai experts, but also for the famous Nürburgring racetrack, where the cars go under rigorous testing and inspection.

Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said: “Hyundai N spearheads the technological leadership of Hyundai Motor Company. N brand’s winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in IONIQ 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance. Key developments around this vehicle will further strengthen the competitiveness of all Hyundai models going forward. This is why N brand exists.”

The N range

As the first N model car to wear the N badge, the IONIQ 5 N made its official debut in July. You might’ve already seen it live if you were lucky enough to attend Goodwood Festival of Speed in July – on the Friday or Sunday that is, after the event was cancelled on Saturday 15th July due to high winds. At the event, Hyundai N had their own exhibition stand, where they created an ‘N moment’ with a show run at the festival’s iconic 1.87-kilometre Hillclimb event.

The IONIQ 5 N was also joined by the N motorsport line-up: i30 N TCR, Elantra N TCR and i20 N WRC, as well as the N Vision 74 rolling lab.

Passionate exterior design

The IONIQ 5 N distinguishes itself from the standard IONIQ 5 with new proportions. Overall, it’s 20mm lower, 50mm wider at the bottom to accommodate wider tires and 80mm longer due to the more prominent diffuser.

The stylish exterior adds an N Mask graphic fascia at the front, with air flaps for extra cooling and a lip spoiler to emphasise the car’s low-slung stance. The contrasting black trim parts and a wing-type rear spoiler highlight the sporty aspects of the standard model.

Intelligent interior design

Inside, you can find various N-branded elements. Emblazoned features include the steering wheel (with customisable N buttons), seats, door scuff panels and metal pedals.

The IONIQ 5 N’s centre console features knee pads, shin support and a sliding armrest for optimal track driving. And for everyday journeys, there are cupholders, C-type USB ports and a wireless phone charger for your convenience.

Sharp corners and high acceleration are no problem for this car, which has N seats with reinforced bolsters to support the upper and lower body while driving. The two-toned N bucket seats are about 20mm lower than the basic specification, so they’re perfect for customers who crave the feeling of high-performance drivability.

Impressive performance

It’s all about the N, with plenty of exclusive performance features in the IONIQ 5 N, including N Battery Preconditioning, N Race, N Pedal, N Drift Optimiser, N Torque Distribution and N Launch Control – to name just a few.

Before driving, drivers can use N Battery Pre-conditioning to optimise the battery cells to the most power-efficient temperature before driving. Choose Drag mode for a short burst of full power or Track mode for the lowest possible battery temperature for more laps.

N Race allows drivers to prioritise Endurance, which maximises range on the racetrack, or Sprint, which prioritises power and provides shorter bursts of full energy.
