If you're planning to getaway you can help avoid holiday disruption with pre-travel tyre checks. As well as inspecting the condition of the tyres and making sure they have adequate tread depth, drivers should ensure that tyres are properly inflated, taking account of any additional passengers or loads carried.
Are your tyres safe?
A decrease in tyre tread depth
leads to the deterioration of the tyre's performance during cornering and
braking, which means the tyre is unable to transmit traction and braking forces
to the road as effectively. Driving with worn or damaged tyres could cost you
£2,500 and 3 penalty points.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) recommends that you change your tyres when the tread depth is 3mm, as below this level it takes longer to stop in wet conditions.
The Tyre Law
When tyres become worn or damaged they must be replaced. There must, by law, be at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the centre 3/4 of the width of the tread throughout the entire circumference of the tyre. There must be no damage to the tyre body - sidewalls or tread, no bulges or cuts.
