At Johnsons, we’re big fans of the Toyota Hilux, and we’re excited to see the new 2021 version arrive later this year! The long-standing pickup truck will arrive with a new powerful engine, a reshaped front grille and chassis, and new connectivity options.
The Hilux has a legendary reputation for being tough – perhaps most famously when it survived being on top of a 23-storey tower block as it was demolished in series 3 of Top Gear (the team subsequently labelled it ‘indestructible’).
Toyota have taken this iconic status and claimed: “The world's toughest icon since 1968 is about to get even tougher.” But what new features does the ninth generation Hilux come with?
The iconic midsize pickup is known for its confidence in tackling every terrain and overcoming every obstacle. Arriving with the tagline ‘Invincible by name, invincible by nature’ the 2021 Hilux has been tested to the extreme. Last month, a prototype was even put through its paces off-road by Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso.
The new generation comes with an impressive 1-tonne payload, 3.5-tonne towing capacity and manual 4x4 system, plus an array of off-road assistance, including an automatic Limited Slip Differential to Hill-Start Assist Control and Active Traction Control.
The 2021 Hilux gets a more powerful four-cylinder 2.8-litre diesel engine, producing 201 bhp and 500Nm of torque. The new powertrain is standard on the aptly named ‘Invincible X’ trim, and is also optional on the ‘Invincible’ grade.
Easily recognisable from its muscular style, the latest incarnation of the Hilux has been treated to a new angular front-end look with a three-dimensional grille and bumper treatment, plus stunning new LED headlights. Climb inside the commanding cabin to discover a more connected driving experience, thanks to an updated infotainment system, with an 8-inch tablet-style touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an optional 800W, nine-speaker JBL sound system.

We do not charge you a fee for our services. we will typically receive commission from whichever lender we introduce you to (either a fixed fee or a fixed percentage of the amount you borrow).
Unless we consider it to be inappropriate given your personal circumstances, for certain vehicles e.g. New, our approach is to introduce you to the lender who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account interest rates, residual valuations (where applicable) and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, or the vehicle is not one that we would normally place with them we will introduce you to other lenders on our panel. The lender we introduce you to and available rates will depend upon a number of factors including: the vehicle, your personal circumstances and the likelihood of a lender to accept an application based on information provided.
Lenders typically pay a commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions; some lenders may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you would like to know the amount of any remuneration we have received from the finance provider, please ask us.
