City slicker: the eye-catching Honda e stops traffic to be named ‘City Car of the Year’

Think dinky. Think plucky. And think funky. What do you get? The Honda e electric car – in other words, the worthy winner of the City Car of the Year award in the 2021 UK Car of the Year (UK COTY). Showcasing Honda’s ‘The Power of Dreams’ at its best, this bijou urban car is unquestionably a dream come true, thanks to its distinct combination of dynamic performance, refined comfort and futuristic technology.

The UK Car of the Year Awards is a wholly independent set of awards, designed to shine a light and advise on the very best new cars on the UK market. Now in its sixth year, it’s the calibre of the 29 professional judges covering the entire industry that lends UK COTY unmatched gravitas. The expert panel were suitably struck by the car’s unique blend of style and substance, not to mention the fact it can be navigated with such ease.

On the one hand, Honda’s first fully electric car looks as if it’s taken inspiration from a bygone era, with its sweet, retro-styled touches seen in its curvy contours, circular headlight design and gloss black exterior cladding. But on closer inspection, be prepared to be dazzled by a flash of the future, thanks to flush door handles, cameras in place of mirrors, and two sizeable touchscreens in the interior.

Nargess Banks, UK COTY judge, shared some glowing feedback about this fiercely futuristic car: “It epitomises the spirit of electric urban transport. This car, with its cute animé looks, takes Honda in the right direction.”

This fab five-door electric hatchback is, of course, not purely to be judged by its cover – armed with a 35.5 kWh battery, it delivers no less than a 137-mile range, meaning it’s the ideal urban, short-distance, zero-emissions hero to get behind the wheel of. Put your foot on the ‘gas’ and the Honda e will accelerate from 0-62mph in a nifty 8.3 seconds, and with a 50kW rapid charger it can achieve 80% charge in merely 31 minutes.

Rebecca Adamson, head of Automobiles at Honda UK, was thrilled about this latest success for the Honda e, saying that “the car has already won many accolades in the UK and across Europe, and it is great to see that momentum continuing in the New Year with the UK COTY class win and overall shortlisting”.
