The Honda Civic Type R has roared into contention to be crowned World Performance Car of the Year after reaching in the top five in a competition judged by 73 leading motoring writers from across the globe.
The model bring serious performance to the table and is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, climate and cruise control, a parking camera and LED headlights, all as standard. The GT model is the only version that gets the full suite of tech.
With a starting price from £29,995, the car’s safety kit features collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, blind spot and lane departure warning. There’s also dual-zone climate control, automatic wipers and headlights, parking sensors all round and Honda’s latest CONNECT infotainment system with sat-nav.
The Civic Type R, promoted as a “race car for the road”, is powered by the most extreme and high-performance Type R engine ever built. The 2.0 litre VTEC TURBO petrol engine provides power, torque and performance figures unmatched in the front-wheel drive hot hatch segment.
Phil Crossman, Managing Director of Honda (UK) said: “We always knew that the Civic Type R was set to be a game-changer for Honda, and this latest accolade once again confirms it.”
Honda has won awards in the past such as the World Green Car of the Year in 2006 (Hybrid) and 2009 (FCX Clarity).
