The hybrid powertrain has been improved significantly. New Prius is set to deliver an 18% improvement in emissions and fuel consumption, the largest leap yet in cleaner running and efficiency in successive generations of the model. The petrol engine stays the same, 1.8-litre VVT-i, but changes to the unit makes its thermal efficiency figure comparable to a diesel engine. For the cold weather, a new system was added, that uses a coolant water selector valve to speed up the engine warm-up.

The additional batteries can now be located in the engine compartment and the hybrid battery under the rear seats, giving the model more luggage space. The boot model for the new Prius is now of 502 litres. The dashboard comes with a new 4.2-inch display that shows data and images in full coulour with great graphics and by using the steering wheel, the driver can select preferred content. The new automatic air conditioning adjusts ventilation and heating for the rear passengers accordingly, and minimises the air flow around the empty seats, helping improve the fuel efficiency.
