SUV RANGE

What is an SUV – and what does the wordmean?

SUV stands for Sports Utility Vehicle. SUVs come in all shapes and sizes, from mini-SUVs to full-size SUVs, each filling a substantial gap in the market. For instance, a Toyota SUV enables off-road motoring but is equally up to the challenges of everyday motoring,as experienced bybusy families, for example.

All Toyota SUVs provide plenty of space for five travellers, and the Land Cruiser can also comfortably convey seven occupants. Both the C-HR and RAV4 have a five-door body style, which ensures that access to the rear seats and boot compartment is as simple as possible. The majority of Land Cruiser models have a five-door body, but it is possible to choose a three-door variant.

Is it an SUV or a 4x4?

An SUV isn’t necessarily a 4x4, and vice versa. For example, while the Toyota C-HR and RAV4 typically come with front-wheel drive, they can be selected with four-wheel drive if preferred. The largest of Toyota’s SUVs, the Land Cruiser is a 4x4 by default.

A 4x4 is most suited for dealing with all kinds of terrain and weather conditions, from rocky landscapes to snow-covered roads. A front-wheel-drive SUV, on the other hand, will allow its owner to dabble in a bit of off-roading, but it isdesigned more for handling relatively flat planes, such as those found in the city or on motorways.

The C-HR and the RAV4 are relatively compact SUVs, whereas the Land Cruiser falls very much into the full-size category.

What are the benefits of owning a Toyota SUV?

An SUV is typically more practical than the average five-seat car. Even the smallest SUV in the Toyota range, the C-HR, comfortably accommodates five adult travellers. Headroom and legroom provision isgenerous, even for rear-row occupants, and if you need more passenger capacity, the Land Cruiser can be specified with seven seats.

A Toyota SUV delivers a smooth ride too, because the body is elevated, enabling greater suspension. This ensures that uneven road surfaces are barely registered by occupants.

While looks aren’t necessarily the most important consideration, a Toyota SUV is designed to attract admiring glances, which certainly doesn’t hurt.

As well as being well-equipped as standard, a Toyota SUV is very safe. The C-HR and RAV4 each boast a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and the Land Cruiser is as robust and reliable as they come.

Is a Toyota hybrid SUV affordable to own?

The C-HR and RAV4 are each available in hybrid form, which means they can both be chosen with an electric-petrol drivetrain. Consequently, at lower speeds, eithervariant can be driven in electric-only mode, thus saving on fuel bills – and producing zero emissions in the process.

The more urban driving you do, the less likely you are to use the petrol engine. Even if you enjoy all types of motoring, you will almost certainly spend less money on petrol for a hybrid than you would topping-up a fuel-driven SUV.

The standard C-HR (fitted with 1.2-litre 115bhp petrol engine) manages up to 47.9mpg, and produces 135g/km of CO2. The hybrid version, meanwhile (with a 1.8-litre 122bhp petrol-electric unit), returns as much as 74.3mpg, while producing emissions as low as 86g/km.

What’s more, the cost of maintaining a standard or hybrid SUV is pretty much the same.
