Volvo XC40 UK Car of the Year Awards

Volvo is a hot contender for UK Car of the Year title following two category wins

Following a very successful awards haul in 2018, Volvo have started 2019 on a high with double honours at the UK Car of the Year Awards. The Swedish giant claimed two category wins, with the XC40 scooping the ‘Best Small Hatch’ title and V60 being named ‘Best Estate’. Both models are now in contention for the overall Car of the Year award, to be announced on 1st March – a title currently held by another Volvo, the XC60.

At Johnsons we were delighted to see the XC40 and V60 being recognised in these prestigious awards. The UK Car of the Year Awards judging panel comprises 29 of the UK's best-respected motoring journalists, who assessed the shortlisted models across a wide range of criteria, including performance, design, practicality and equipment levels. The double honours in the 2019 contest are further proof of Volvo’s success in delivering new cars that are desirable, distinctive and at the cutting edge of connectivity and safety technology.

Judges praised the XC40 for its original thinking, great design, interior space and flexibility; in the words of Matt Robinson, the XC40 is “a breath of icy-cool fresh air from Sweden”. Meanwhile the V60 won acclaim for its individual styling, driving dynamics, practicality and spaciousness, with Alisdair Suttie commenting: “Volvo is the past master of the art of the estate car, and the V60 encapsulates that perfectly.”

And the judges aren’t alone in their reverence for the XC40 and V60, customer sales of both models have soared since their launch, helping drive Volvo's UK new car sales to their best performance in nearly 30 years in 2018. Jon Wakefield, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: “These awards reaffirm the all-round strengths and appeal of our new model line-up. We aim to provide customers with the best possible choice, no matter what their needs, and will continue to develop these model ranges with new powertrains and the latest advances in high-tech equipment.”

With the triumphant model in each category going forward to compete for the illustrious title of overall UK Car of the Year 2019, keep your eyes peeled for the announcement on 1st March! To find out more about the XC40 or V60, get in touch with the team at your local Johnsons Volvo today.
