Volvo - first to launch a car without a key

Volvo will be the first car manufacturer to offer models without keys from next year. This is an innovative move from Volvo and it will be done just by having an app on a mobile phone, replacing the physical key with a digital one. This gives customers more freedom, allowing them to benefit from entirely new ways to use and share cars. By using the advanced Bluetooth-enabled digital key technology the customer’s mobile phone will do everything a physical key currently does, such as locking and unlocking the doors or the boot and allowing the engine to be started.

This app also offers the possibility to book and pay for a rental car anywhere in the world and have the digital car key delivered to their phone immediately. When arriving, the customer can locate the model via GPS, unlock it and drive away, avoiding queues at the airport or train station car rental desks. Another great thing about the new technology is that you will be able to send your digital key to other people via mobile phones. This may be to family members, friends or co-workers in a company.

The Vice President of Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars, Henrik Green said:”…New technology has to make our customers’ lives easier and same them time. Mobility needs are evolving and so are our customers’ expectation to access cars in an uncomplicated way.”
