In the short time since its 2016 release, the Volvo V90 has firmly established itself as a high-end saloon car to be reckoned with. Bigger and more sophisticated than its predecessor (the V70), the V90 is also the larger estate variant of the S90 sedan.

An elegant exterior is just one reason to favour the V90 over premium German and British car manufacturers. The vehicle’s good looks are certainly an upgrade on those offered by either the V70 or XC70. The V90’s front fascia, for instance, oozes effortless style, with a subtly inverted radiator grille that is flanked by sleek LED headlamps. The rear of the car features LED lights too, and a power-operated boot lid that makes access to the luggage bay a breeze. There is an array of eye-catching fixtures included with the V90 as standard, such as the lightweight and stylish alloy wheels it rides on.

If you currently own the V70, or the XC70 for that matter, the V90’s cabin represents a considerable improvement. Generous amounts of wood are utilised in this leather-upholstered interior, which includes heated front positions; a most welcome feature on especially cold days. Two-zone climate control and power-operated windows are included too, ensuring that it’s always easy to establish an ideal in-cabin temperature.

The V90 is spacious, making it ideal for families. Several convenient cubby spaces are featured too, including a good-size glovebox, centre-console and armrest compartments, well-proportioned door bins and cup-holders in both rows. With its 60/40 split-folding rear seats flipped, the V90’s luggage capacity increases from 560 litres to a useful 1,526 litres. The cargo bay is a good shape too, and a low load sill ensures that the placement and retrieval of bulky items is a straightforward process.

Entry-level Momentum and next-level Inscription grades are installed with a 2.0-litre 190bhp diesel (D4) engine as standard. This delivers a peak torque of 400Nm and 0-60mph in approximately 8.3 seconds. It’s the most fuel-efficient option too, returning as much as 62.8mpg and producing CO 2 emissions as low as 119g/km. Top-of-the-line Inscription trims, meanwhile, are powered by a 2.0-litre 235bhp diesel engine, which produces 480Nm of torque, 0-60mph in roughly seven seconds and a top speed of 145mph. This D5 unit, nevertheless, still manages up to 57.6mpg, and produces 129g/km of CO 2. The V90 delivers greater efficiency than either the V70 or XC70 and, with all-wheel drive models are more potent too.

The vehicle comes with an array of leading-edge tech, such as a nine-inch portrait-oriented Sensus touchscreen. A ten-speaker sound system, Bluetooth® connectivity, voice control, wireless internet access and satellite navigation are all standard inclusions too.

It should come as no surprise, but the V90 comes with a maximum five-star crash-test rating. This was awarded by Euro NCAP, who declared that the results were “as good [as] or better than those of the S90”. The car boasts an extensive range of driver aids and passive safety, such as Electronic Stability Control, ISOFIX child-seat fixtures and multiple airbags. In addition, the V90 comes with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that uses radar technology and distance readings to monitor the activity of vehicles ahead. Essentially, it maintains a safe distance between the V90 and the car that precedes it, and, among other things, keeps the vehicle in your desired lane. This feature alone marks the car out from the V70 or XC70.

Top Gear has described the V90 as “a properly desirable Volvo wagon – finally a decent alternative to the Germans”. Why not judge for yourself by booking a test drive with us today?
