Volvo celebrates the XC40 being named Family SUV of the Year for a third time by What Car?

We were thrilled to see Volvo XC40 named the ‘Family SUV of the Year’ at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2021! This is the third time in four years that the model has won this prestigious award, with judges praising the model’s cabin space, practicality, quality and “top-notch” safety.

This is the 44th year of the What Car? Car of the Year Awards, which comprise 20 categories and more than 160 models. This year, the presentations were entirely digital and took place across an entire week.

The XC40 previously collected the ‘Family SUV of the Year’ award in 2018 and 2019. For 2021, the judges picked out the T3 R-Design automatic version, saying:

“It might be a few years since we voted the multi-talented Volvo XC40 our Car of the Year, but it still cuts the mustard. It blends generous passenger space and a practical boot with a quality interior and top-notch safety, so you aren’t only buying a hugely desirable product, but one backed up with real substance.”

It’s an apt finale to a successful 2020 for the XC40, which was not only Volvo’s best-selling UK model, but was also the most popular SUV in the premium market segment. Looking to the future, the XC40 range demonstrates Volvo’s mission of electrification, with several Recharge plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid versions featuring in the line-up.

Commenting on the latest award, Volvo Car UK Managing Director Kristian Elvefors said:

“We are immensely proud of what the XC40 has achieved and grateful to What Car? for this latest award. The XC40 is our best-selling model in the UK and perfectly encapsulates what our brand stands for in terms of design, customer appeal and the application of new technologies for better performance, safety and connectivity.”
