Volvo has emerged victorious from the 2015 Auto Express New Car awards. The XC90 was named Large SUV of the Year and Car of the Year at the award ceremony in London on Tuesday 30th June.
The XC90 has only been on sale for one month in the UK, but already it appears to have made quite an impression. The award-winning model has almost sold out of its entire production of 50,000 cars that are planned for the year. Around 10% of the orders have been from UK customers.
It has been 12 years since the original XC90 won the prestigious award. The all-new XC90 is the first of Volvo’s cars to be built entirely in-house and uses Volvo’s in-house designed and built engine, the Drive-E, but some things will never change. Nick Connor is Managing Director at Volvo Car UK and collected the Large SUV of the Year award. He celebrated the original XC90, saying it “revolutionised the SUV market when it launched back in 2002” but expressed his belief that the XC90 would follow in its footsteps. He praised the “design language, intuitive connectivity and class-leading powertrains” of the new model while stressing that the practicality and usability of the SUV is here to stay.
Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President of Research & Development accepted the Car of the Year award and credited Volvo’s “great passion” for their success. He also declared that the reason Volvo cars are popular is that they deliver “the latest technology – but in a user-friendly manner”.
