We recently wrote about Hyundai’s new IONIQ electric sub-brand, so we were excited to catch a glimpse of the first upcoming model: the IONIQ 5.
One of three EVs set to join the IONIQ family in the next four years, the IONIQ 5 takes the form of a futuristic SUV, and is likely to officially break cover in February. But, perhaps in an attempt to spice up our lockdown, Hyundai have treated us to some official teaser images, which give a good insight into how it will look. And it doesn’t disappoint!
The preview images look similar to the retro-futuristic design language seen in the Hyundai 45 concept revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019. Perhaps the most intriguing feature is the ‘Parametric Pixels’ design element, which takes the form of tiny pixel-style lighting elements that adorn the front of the car. There’s also a huge clamshell style bonnet and 20-inch aero-optimised wheels (the largest rims ever fitted to a Hyundai EV) to ensure this is an electric SUV like no other!
The IONIQ 5 will also be the first production model from the Korean marque to use Hyundai and Kia’s new E-GMP platform for electric cars. Hyundai Design Head, SangYup Lee, commented:
“Beginning with IONIQ 5, our dedicated BEV lineup brand will redefine the relationship between people and their cars, establishing a new standard against which all BEV design experiences will be measured.”
But looking beyond the design, Hyundai have released some clues as to what we can expect from the IONIQ 5’s performance. The model will boast ultra-fast charging from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, and Hyundai also make a rather bold claim that the power supply via bidirectional charging is enough to roast a turkey in a large oven!
We look forward to hearing more about this exciting model, but for now, we’ll let the images speak for themselves…
