Hyundai announces new IONIQ sub-brand with three new EVs in the works

At Johnsons Hyundai, we’re huge fans of the IONIQ family car. The first car in the world to feature three electrified powertrains (hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric) has been instrumental in delivering progress in electrified mobility, and has also been a hit with drivers and critics alike – the hybrid version was named ‘Best Hybrid Car’ at the Carbuyer Best Cars Awards 2020 and the electric incarnation was recently crowned ‘Best Electric Family Car’ at the inaugural What Car? Electric Car Awards.

We were therefore thrilled to hear that Hyundai has announced plans for a new IONIQ sub-brand, which will specialise in electric cars and is set to introduce three new models in the next four years.

The announcement reinforces Hyundai’s commitment to clean mobility – its ‘Strategy 2025’ aims to sell 1 million units of battery electric vehicles and become a leader in the global EV field by 2025. Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company, commented: “The IONIQ brand will change the paradigm of EV customer experience. With a new emphasis on connected living, we will offer electrified experiences integral to an eco-friendly lifestyle.”

Hyundai will be launching a range of numerically named EVs under the new IONIQ brand, with even numbers used for sedans and odd numbers for SUVs. The first model will be the IONIQ 5 midsize CUV that is due to launch in early 2021. Hot on its heels will be the IONIQ 6 sedan, due to launch in 2022, followed by the IONIQ 7, a large SUV in early 2024.

IONIQ brand models will use an Electric Global Modular Platform, known as E-GMP, that will enable fast-charging capability and ambitious driving range. The EV-dedicated platform will allow Hyundai to reimagine the vehicle interior as “smart living space” with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity, and much more.

At Johnsons, we’re excited to see the rebirth of IONIQ, as the ground-breaking model evolves into an important project in moving towards an electric future. Watch this space for more information on this exciting sub-brand!
