PIP and you next Motability car from Johnsons

There’s no need to worry, as the Motability Scheme at Johnsons will work with PIP in exactly the same way it has worked with the DLA, meaning that you’re eligible for a Motability vehicle from Johnsons if you receive:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment.

When assessed for PIP, if you are not awarded the ‘enhanced’ rate, you will not be eligible for the Motability Scheme.

At Johnsons Cars, we’re here to support all Motability customers – our helpful advisors are able to answer any questions on PIP and your next lease.

If you would like to explore the fantastic offers available on Motability vehicles at Johnsons, please contact a Johnsons Motability expert, located in each of our dealerships.

What's Changing?

If you’re currently a recipient of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you will no doubt already know about the introduction of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). This is gradually replacing the current DLA benefit payment that can be exchanged for a Motability vehicle at Johnsons, even for those with an ‘indefinite’ or ‘lifetime’ award.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) began the rollout back in April 2013 and the transition is expected to be complete by October 2018, with PIP available for 16 – 65 year-olds with eligible disabilities. Disabled children will continue to receive DLA until they reach the age of 16, along with recipients who were aged 65 years or over on 8th April 2013.

PIP has two components for ‘daily living’ and ‘mobility’ and an assessment will determine who is eligible for the ‘standard’ or ‘enhanced’ rates of pay. As the assessment criteria for PIP differ slightly to those used for DLA, Motability Scheme eligibility may be impacted.

What does it mean for you?

The DWP is in the process of contacting all DLA recipients explaining that the scheme is due to end. The letter will offer more information about PIP and explain how to apply for it – but you aren’t required to take any action until you are contacted by the DWP. DLA payments will continue until PIP has been claimed. If PIP is not claimed or has not been awarded, DLA payments will cease.

Newly Awarded PIP

If you currently receive the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you may already be aware of the introduction of the Personal Independence Payment, or PIP. This is a new scheme that will gradually replace the DLA that can be exchanged for a vehicle on Motability with Johnsons.

There are currently some new additions to PIP and the Motability scheme, meaning you may now be eligible for a Motability vehicle:

If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Motability Component of PIP, you may now be eligible to join the Motability Scheme. This means you’ll be able to benefit from our amazing range of vehicles across the 11 brands we offer at Johnsons, all for amazing value. Additionally, if you have 12 months or more remaining on your current allowance, you can now apply to lease a car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair.

To begin benefitting from these new additions, you simply need to exchange all or part of your mobility allowance to lease the vehicle of your choice. We have Motability-trained specialists available at all of our Johnsons dealerships to help you choose the perfect car for you, as well as discuss any special requirements you may need.

Johnsons is proud to have great experience with Motability, and each of our 11 dealerships have a huge range of cars available for you to choose from, each with incredible offers that are constantly being updated. You’ll get all the essentials included with your new Motability vehicle from insurance to breakdown cover, so all you need to do is add fuel.

Awaiting PIP reassessment

If you are a recipient of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you will no doubt already know about the introduction of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which is being gradually introduced to replace the current DLA scheme that can be exchanged for a vehicle on Motability at Johnsons. Because of this, there are a few changes to the way you are assessed for the allowance, and as such, you may find that the amount you receive will change.

If you haven’t already, you will soon be informed of a new assessment date to get you onto the new scheme. Here is what you can expect:

If you are invited to apply for PIP and are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Motability component of PIP, you can continue leasing a Motability vehicle as normal. There shouldn’t be any disruption to your lease and you will not have to change your car.

However, if you are not awarded the Enhanced Rate, you will no longer be eligible to lease a car through the Motability Scheme, and you will need to return your car. Any advance payments made may be refunded, and you won’t have to pay any further lease payments.

While you wait to be transferred to the PIP system, you will be able to lease a new car as long as you have at least 12 months remaining on your current mobility allowance. If you have less than 12 months, or are invited to apply for PIP, you will need to get in contact with one of our friendly team to discuss extending your lease while you wait for your result.

Johnsons is proud to have great experience with Motability, and each of our 11 dealerships have Motability-trained specialists available for you to talk to with any questions or issues. We offer a huge range of Motability vehicles, and you’ll even get all the essentials included with your new Motability vehicle from insurance to breakdown cover, so all you need to do is add fuel.

Because of this, there are a few changes to the way you are assessed for the allowance, and as such, you may find that the amount you receive will change.

If you have been invited to apply for PIP and have found that your reassessment means you are not awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Motability Component of PIP, you will unfortunately no longer be able to lease a vehicle on Motability, and one of our Motability-trained specialists at Johnsons will be in touch to help support you through this transition.

You will have about six weeks to return your car after the DWP’s decision, and the Motability scheme will write to you with all the information you need, including details of the transitional support package. Any advance payments made may also be eligible for a pro-rata refund. The transitional support package includes up to £2,000 of financial support, dependant on when you joined the Scheme, as well as support to fit adaptations to a non-Scheme vehicle if necessary.
