The launch of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia leads the charge in Alfa Romeo’s $5 billion rebrand which will see eight new models in the next three years. Classic style and heritage abounds in the previous cars of the 105-year-old brand but Alfa Romeo are now to focus exclusively on sporty, high specification models.
The Giulia could be owned by the first customers by the end of the year, and Alfa are promising a car with character, charm and emotion. The Ferrari-developed Biturbo 3.0-litre V6 engine produces 503bhp to power this flagship car into the hearts of driving enthusiasts. Alfa Romeo’s new criteria ensure their cars will be built with innovative engines, 50/50 weight distribution, advanced technological solutions, superlative power-to-weight ratios and distinctive Italian design.
The Giulia has rear-wheel drive and claims best in class torsional rigidity. A new semi-virtual steering access is designed to improve steering accuracy at high speed. The power-to-weight ratio is said to be around 3kg per horsepower thanks to extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon fibre and aluminium. A 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds has been quoted although there are few other statistics available so far. Boss Sergio Marchionne expressed an unwillingness to reveal too many numbers as it makes the car seem “cold”.
The new Alfa models have been developed in secret over the past two years at a dedicated new facility. With instructions simply to “respect the brand, innovate and be revolutionary” the 600 staff working on the next generation are all dedicated car enthusiasts and have created cars with soul.
