acceleration from 0-62mph in a mere 7.6 seconds. The power driving the Golf GTE
comes from a 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine with 148bhp output, and
a 101bhp electric motor. The Golf GTE is fitted with six-speed dual-clutch
automatic transmission, for the smoothest of gear shifts. Fuel efficiency is an
impressive 166mpg on a combined cycle, while CO2 emissions are low,
at around 40g/km.

The Golf GTE plug-in
hybrid allows you to select the most suitable driving mode for your journey. For
longer journeys, the hybrid mode is ideal, as it switches automatically as
required between petrol and electric power. Hybrid mode gives a combined range
of 514 miles. If you choose electric-only mode, you have a range of up to 31
miles, which is more than adequate for doing those short trips around town or
the school run. Charging takes 3 hours 45 minutes using a standard mains
socket, or just 2 hours 15 minutes if you have a Podpoint wall box installed, or
at a public charging station.

mobile service package on the GTE allows you to control numerous features in
your electric car via your smartphone. Battery management allows you to check
the current charge level, the range remaining, and when it is charging you can
see the time left to reach a full charge. The Car-Net parking position service
means you’ll never again find yourself wondering where you left your car on in the
multi-storey car park. This feature instantly identifies where you last parked
your car and it can also show your quickest route to walk there. You can also check
remotely whether you have switched off your headlights and locked the doors of
your GTE.

The GTE hybrid brings a

outstanding performance and greater efficiency, with the enduringly popular styling
of the Volkswagen Golf. New updates added to the Golf GTE for 2017 include
restyled bumpers, new LED lights at the front and at the rear, and inside you
will find a new infotainment system. The Golf GTE is available exclusively with
five doors, yet it has a sportier appearance than the standard Golf, and sits
slightly closer to the ground thanks to the sports suspension. The LED daytime
running lights have the same C-shaped design as those on the all-electric
e-Golf. Unique 17-inch alloy wheels are fitted on the standard Golf GTE, while
an upgrade to the GTE Advance gets 18-inch alloys. With the power to move from
0-62mph in just 7.6 seconds, there is a lot to like about the new Golf GTE.
Step inside
Inside the cabin you will
find stylish sports seats featuring a tartan pattern with blue contrast
stitching. Dual-zone climate control keeps both you and your passengers
comfortable no matter what the temperature is outside. Additional features in
the GTE Advance include heated front seats, rear privacy glass and sat nav. You
also get an external sound generator which increases the volume when you are driving
in electric mode, to make people more aware of your car. The interior is
spacious, and the battery for the electric motor sits beneath the rear seats,
so it doesn’t detract from the Golf’s cabin space and you still have plenty of
boot capacity.
Safety and technology
As you would expect from
Volkswagen, your safety is a priority in the Golf GTE, and it has a Euro NCAP
five-star safety rating. Standard features include ABS, ESP, a driver alert
system and adaptive cruise control. Automatic post-collision braking helps to
minimise the impact in the event of a collision. A parking assist system
provides steering assistance for getting into those awkward spaces, and a
parking camera is available as an additional option.
The Golf GTE is fitted with
