Volkswagen ID.4 crowned World Car of the Year 2021

There are undoubtedly many prestigious awards in the motoring world, but they don’t come much bigger than the ‘World Car of the Year’ award. At Johnsons, we were thrilled to see this year's top honours go to the ID.4, as Volkswagen continue their ‘electric offensive’ around the world!

The German automaker giant’s new all-electric SUV scored highly for its market significance, environmental impact and innovative features. 94 global jurors from 28 countries are involved in the awards process, driving and evaluating a wide range of vehicles that are either new or significantly redesigned for the current model year.

The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s second all-electric model sitting on the brand’s new MEB platform (following the ID.3 hatchback). Combining the sustainability of an electric vehicle with the versatility of an SUV, the ID.4 boasts a ground-breaking package of net-carbon mobility, lithe performance, sporty good looks and unsurpassed spaciousness.

Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen Cars CEO, commented:

“We are particularly pleased about our ID.4 being named World Car of the Year. Not only because it is one of the most important car awards in the world – but because the jury also honoured a great idea and a great team.

“The first ID. model for the key markets of Europe, China and the US carries our electric offensive around the world. A convincing car, a great idea – and the World Car of the Year award? That goes well together for us!”

Volkswagen’s latest success in the World Car Awards marks the fifth time the brand has won the top trophy since the awards first launched in 2005. The iconic Golf hatchback won in 2013 and 2019, while the Polo claimed victory in 2010 and the up! in 2012.

The annual awards ceremony encompasses five categories in total, with awards for performance, design, luxury and urban joining the overall winner. To qualify for a World Car Award, vehicles must be sold on at least two of the seven continents for a minimum of one year, stretching from May to May. Here are the winners in full for 2021:
