The New Volkswagen ID.3: Made net carbon neutral

Deliveries of the New Volkswagen ID.3 began last month – this all-electric family hatchback is the highly anticipated inaugural model from Volkswagen’s new ID electric car sub-brand…but that’s not all!

Billed as Volkswagen’s most important model since the Beetle and Golf, the ID.3 is the first model to arrive on the VW Group’s MEB platform – an architecture designed specifically for electric powertrains. But even more importantly, Volkswagen has announced that the ID.3 has been created net carbon neutral, the first mass-produced car in the world to make such a claim.

What does ‘net carbon neutral’ mean?

Volkswagen says being ‘made net carbon neutral’ differentiates the ID.3 from other vehicles – but what does it mean?

‘Carbon neutral’ itself is when the carbon emissions caused by a company, service, product or event have been balanced out by funding the equivalent carbon savings. Volkswagen makes the ID.3 net carbon neutral in terms of how it was built, by reducing emissions and off-setting unavoidable emissions. The factory uses green energy from hydroelectric power plants, wind and solar plants, and the brand ensures its supply chain is as carbon neutral as possible. Volkswagen then offsets any unavoidable emissions through climate protection projects like the Forest Protection Project in Borneo. You can find out more here.

And, to encourage buyers to keep the ID.3 carbon neutral throughout ownership (by charging with green energy), Volkswagen is partnering with Octopus Energy to help drivers can enjoy affordable, zero-emission charging at home. Find out more here.

Way To Zero

Volkswagen has also announced its ‘Way To Zero’ campaign. The brand is the first car company to sign up to the Paris Climate Accord of zero carbon by 2050. ‘Way To Zero’ is Volkswagen’s journey to becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and says that making the ID.3 net carbon neutral shows its commitment to this.
