Double honours for Volkswagen at the 2021 carwow Car of the Year Awards

Volkswagen has started the year on a high with double honours at the 2021 carwow Car of the Year Awards. The German giant claimed two category wins, with the ID.3 being named ‘Best Family Electric Car’ and the Golf R scooping the ‘Most Wanted’ award.

At Johnsons we were delighted to see the ID.3 and Golf R being recognised in these prestigious awards, where carwow’s five million YouTube subscribers vote for all-new cars (or models that have been significantly updated).

Released in October 2020, the Volkswagen ID.3 offers cutting-edge technology, a 340-mile range and a head-turning futuristic look. It has also been created net carbon neutral, the first mass-produced car in the world to make such a claim. carwow named the ID.3 ‘Best Family Electric Car’, saying: “Volkswagen’s first standalone EV is a cracker. It’ll carry five people and their stuff, and it can do up to 340 miles on a charge. It’s quiet, has loads of standard kit and is great to drive, too.”

And carwow isn’t alone in its reverence for the ID.3 – in September, the UK motoring media visited Volkswagen’s famous factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, to experience the model first-hand, with good reviews across the board!

Moving onto Volkswagen’s second award of the night, and the Golf R was voted the ‘Most Wanted’, with judges saying: “Going by the amount of traffic it gets to our news pages, the forthcoming Volkswagen Golf R is going to fly out of showrooms. It is a 320hp German pocket rocket that will do 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds, helped by its standard four-wheel-drive system. In a very un-Volkswagen-y move, it even has a ‘Drift’ mode.”

The new Volkswagen Golf R is the fastest version of the Mk8 Golf, with a punchy 2.0-litre petrol engine that’s been tweaked to produce 320hp, delivering sheer, unadulterated power. It also boasts an exclusive 'R' styling pack with uniquely shaped front and rear bumpers and side sills, 18-inch ‘Jerez Black’ diamond turned alloy wheels, 4Motion four-wheel drive and IQ.LIGHT.

These awards follow a successful 2020 for Volkswagen – which most notably won the Sunday Times Manufacturer of the Year 2020 award. We look forward to seeing what the rest of 2021 holds for this exciting brand!
